New Year New Things...

What have you been thinking about for this New Year? Something to save for, to plan for, to decorate for, to exercise for, to quit for, to work for... what's on your list of New Year To-Do's? Seems that New Year we aim to set out to do so many things... why do you think that is? I know in my household it's the one time of the year that we definitely take a home a way from home holiday - where there's just where you stay, a good book, maybe a movie or two, often somewhere near the beach, swimming, alfresco easy meals with drinks in tow, and lots of relaxation and thinking time! And often thinking time leads to planning - well it does in my case - much to my husband's cringe worthy sentiment!

So this year what will I do... hmmmm, more quality time with Isabelle - but at work 5days +, more on our 'new-old' home, more on Palatial Living, more with Verandah [some how], more on my day time career, more courageous moves as opposed to reckless risk taking, more on travel, more more more... where is less - well less spending, less eating - the wrong things[!!], less procrastinating, less frustration, and less impatience. Hey it's a year long project - there's a bit here...

Once we got home from our lovely holiday in our home-away from home Port Douglas... we got cracking on our front & back garden... and have started a terraced area that will be home to our chooks and a Guinea pig when we get them in February some time and Isabelle's slippery dip [aka slide]

So this is MY YEAR- not much like any other year - but I am determined to make a few more things happen and get a few more 'ducks in a row' so to speak!

And next week I am off to India for a week - Yay! On a work trip - for a sponsorship award that I submitted a proposal for & won - selected for might be a better turn of phrase! To an international trade fair headed up by the lovely people at AEPC the Ministry of Textiles India in conjunction with TCF Australia....

So what are you going to make happen this year...

Happy Palatial New Year...farewell 2011 | welcome 2012 x

Thank YOU for joining me at Palatial Living for a wonderful year during 2011...

This year [like you I am sure also] has seen some major changes in my world - swinging from one extreme to the other - some fearful, some great, some incredibly achingly painful - some stupendous I am still in disbelief.... from returning to work from a stint of maternity leave from having our little Isabelle, finding our beloved 'new' old home on the north shore from the original owners, whilst simultaneously learning to separate emotion from our [then] existing home - whilst packing house to move - and 1 week shy of a 2 week work trip to China - then loving & parting with my much adored Grandfather 'Pa' who passed away in June of this year... then in October my husband become incredibly ill after a trip overseas and spent the best part of a week in hospital, and is thankfully, still, on the recovery road.

I am very blessed and without a doubt so lucky to have good health, my daughter & husband, my great family & my dear friends in my life and without forgetting - YOU- and this wonderful avenue at Palatial Living to share my unadulterated inspirations, thoughts, and views on design, colour, living, fashion and maybe a little slice of what I consider 'Palatial Living'. The little things that are both grand & cosy - but always stylish - in and out!

All the best for a safe, fun, fabulous New Year, and for a splendidly Palatial 2012 ahead. I can't wait to share more of my loves with you!

Blood Orange Cosmopolitan - Cocktail
Ingredients - 45ml vodka |15ml Cointreau |10ml fresh lime juice
2 drops bitters| 30ml cranberry juice| 30ml 'Schweppes Agrum Collection' Blood Orange -
Or - use 2 Juiced Fresh Blood Ornageswith 30mls Tonic water

Method - Add all ingredients into a Boston glass

Add ice, shake and strain into a cocktail glass
Top with Schweppes Agrum Blood Orange

Garnish with Burnt orange zest

Couldn't think of any better ways through these delicious fresh and opalescent blood orange, strawberry, lime colours to celebrate summer [here in 'Oz'] . I have included a couple of little favourite recipes of mine... Here in Australia - we say Cheers!

Guava Margaritas

Ingredients - 1 3/4 cups freshly squeezed lime juice, plus wedges for serving

2 3/4 cups [your favourite] tequila |1 1/3 cups Grand Marnier

2 3/4 cups guava puree | Coarse salt, for rims

Directions - Stir together lime juice, tequila, Grand Marnier, and guava puree in a large pitcher;

stir to combine. Refrigerate until chilled.

Just before serving, rub a cut lime around the rim of each glass. Fill a saucer with

salt, and dip each glass, upside down, into the salt. Pour margaritas into glasses, garnish with

lime wedges, and serve immediately.

Sunset Hues... for end 2011

As the sun sets on the last day of 2011 - I wanted to include some of my recent fave images that encompass a little of this tan, tangerine, coral, vermilion, and burnt hue that may have the sun setting on your horizon today... as the last dusk of 2011 draws nigh.

Shamelessly I have included a few of my fave accessories in shoes [tory burch flats] and leather shopper totes.... a little silver shine too.

A paw paw orange is an accent hue that I often find myself drawn to you and use in my interior projects including my own home. It's a hue [colour] that when used correctly can make for a fabulous 'joining colour' and allows either summer or winter - depending on the tint or shade of the 'orange' to season-ise your space. It's a great alternative to Reds, Pinks and Greens....

Why not think about injecting a little into your accessories - wardrobe or home interiors!

Just 1 Sleep to Go.... Can you believe it!

Are you running around like a mad-man today? Cleaning the house, or preparing to host Christmas Eve or Day, are you still present hunting, maybe wrapping - but need more sticky tape or gift paper, or are you simply trying to find enough 'clean' clothes' to pack the bags [for everyone in your family] to go away?

Me... yes, can you tell what's on my mind, I will be probably doing all of the above [except the hosting part - phew] but will add 'preparing the gardens' to my list also! So shall I say this - whatever you're up to - it's just 1 more sleep to go, so you better not cry, you better not pout....my suggestion just pour a glass a champers & have a great time!

Small Spaces For Christmas Decor ~ Part II...

Go Small with Displays

Ornaments have tons of pop -- utilize their glitter and glow for a small-space display. Glue an ornament to a small, round plastic or glass disk. Remove the hanger and tuck in mini blooms or sprigs of berries. Group the vase ornaments on a tray for a centerpiece.

Accent Your Kitchen Windows

Open, airy windowpanes dance with color, thanks to these colorful snowflakes. Hang similar ones in a pattern or at random; add the final touch with a simple swag of greenery overhead

Use Window Space

Simplicity is key for small-space decorating. White pillar candles, placed on a silver tray, add elegance to a windowsill. Two faux dwarf evergreens, wrapped in burlap, add a bit of color to the wintry scene

Make an Impactful Wall Display

Old photos are great conversation starters, particularly at the holidays, and this display takes up only minimal wall space. Start with baby photographs; cut them in a circle, mount on foam core, and arrange in a tree shape. Little space, big impact.

Great Tip: For a great together-time activity, have family members guess who is who in each photo.

Color

A bare-bones tree is a treat for a small corner, and choosing just one accent color is a good way to cut down on visual distractions. For the base of your tree, wrap a small box with a dish towel and fill the base of the box with stones (disguised with a layer of pearl-white ornaments) to hold in place. Add a few more wrapped boxes in a variety of papers and ribbons

Stuck for Space at your place when it comes to Christmas decor? I know I am stuck for space at the best of times just with storage for toys, clothes, shoes manchester etc - especially in the wardrobe dept!

But believe me careful consideration is needed whether you have a lot of space or a little on the tight side of space... when it comes to festive decorating. For those of you on the leaner side of space here's some fabulous tips I found on my blog travels that I thought might come in handy for you, and for those with a lot of space but want to add to those decorations one or two of these ideas you might also love & incorporate into your holiday decorating!

Use Space by the Stairs

A small table by the stairs is a prominent small-space spot to start your Christmas merriment. Add a little, lightly decorated tree and a modest display to the tabletop. To give the evergreen a bit of height, place in a tall silver vase

Brighten a Hanging Picture

You've already decorated your home with personal pictures -- give them a holiday touch with a sprig of evergreen. No special crafting tools required

Use Wall Space

That lovely solid-color wall in your living room? The perfect home for a holiday display. Here, miniature grapevine wreaths add texture to a green wall. We chose a variety of accents -- faux birds, small ornaments, sprigs of berries -- and glued them onto the wreaths before hanging the displays from a length of ribbon

Fabricate a Faux Tree

If you don't have space for -- or just don't want -- a real tree, you can get the same feel with this evergreen idea. Start with a wide branch; hang on a hook from the wall and decorate with treasured ornaments.

Utilize Vertical Space

If space is limited, you might not be able to hang every ornament you own on a tree, but there's no reason to keep the leftovers boxed up. Look for unexpected places -- from a chandelier, at a window, over a doorway -- to dangle a few for sparkle and cheer

Fill a Corner

Nooks, crannies, shelves, bookcases: All are great spots for diminutive seasonal decor. If there's no space for a full tree, put a single dwarf version -- with a few presents -- on a midheight shelf. In place of lights, decorate with small-scale ornaments

Decorate with Small Wreaths

Large and impactful are typical design credos for wreaths, but small can be equally as mighty. Hang a mini wreath with a velvet or satin ribbon from shelves or drawer pulls

Making clever use of wall space will ensure that your small-space holiday schemes have impact. To boost the seasonal spirits of small stretches of wall space, try this simple trick: Use a length of ribbon and hang ornaments that spell out a message (tie the ribbon around each to keep in place). Secure with thumbtacks and disguise the ends with a bit of evergreen

Add a Tree in a Bathroom

Don't overlook bathrooms as places to add some merry touches. Here, a small corner offers a great spot for a potted tree decorated with cream and blue ceramic bells and glass balls

Create a Hanging Window Display Look out on something pretty -- a basic painted frame strung with ribbon and hung with ornaments jazzes up a window and requires zero rearranging

12 Sleeps 'til Christmas...

Hello There! It's been a while between posts... my work life - a trip to Hong Kong & mainland China took over end October / Early November. Whilst away it was my birthday spent with a new colleague but very different being away from home - husband Matthew and little girl Isabelle. Then came more projects - mostly more painting at our 'new' old home and a spot gardening... and to end the whole box n' dice - my husband was very sick leaving us with a good visit to emergency and a stay in hospital!

So here I am, and I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to Christmas especially now that our little girl Isabelle is nearly 20months old and goes to smell our 'real' Christmas tree each morning - motioning 'twinkle twinkle little star' every time she sees the fairy lights and the star topper!

So here's the mark of the 12 Days of Christmas with only 12 Sleeps to go! Have you got your home decorated? Your tree up and presents nestled beneath? Or your front garden twinkling lights through the evening yet?

INspiring Garden Rooms...

This weekend my husband & I [with our trusty 18month old helper, Isabelle, who loves a watering can!) are tackling the first of my garden design plans for the Room Zones in our rear yard at home! We have small retaining walls to build, land to level, mulch and feed, raised garden beds to construct, screens to erect, paint to brush on, and seasonal seedlings to plant! Yes - a lot to do!

The Rear Yard Space

Zone 1 - will be a seasonal fruit -vegetable & herb patch with raised beds great for drainage, growth, my back and within reach for Isabelle! We wanted to create a garden that our daughter could learn where her food - her fruit & vegetables come from and how they look so she can identify different foods. I think this is a very important part of learning & developing for tastes, good health and sense of tactility , shape & colour from nature.

Zone 2 - we have a space at the very rear of the back yard that falls to a slope , here we will continue lines from Zone 1 and level this space to create a lower terrace area. This area is partially shaded by three Turpentine trees, several mature camellias and Japanese maples and home to dark green strappy clivias. This terrace is perfect for our planting of a verburnum boundary hedge, pleaching the camellia trees to up light, low lying shrubs & shaped azaleas, native ground covers, improved drainage for the lawn. Not to mention great level space for a cubby house and play equipment.

Zone 3 - the main yard lawn space located closer to the house has a gentle slope towards the back right corner where we will bring the right side of the yard up approx two feet and plant out & mulch up the ride side garden / fence. Within this space a home for our little brown hens will be positioned against a warm brick wall of the back verandah and with a northerly aspect - prime real estate! These little brown hens will join our family in the New Year once we are back from our summer holidays!

Zone 4 - leading from the driveway will be terraced into a small level entry to the main rear yard accommodating 1 -2 sandstone flagged steps, a perfect entry into our thoughtfully planned garden rooms child, adult & pet friendly!

The Front Yard

Front Main Terrace - will be planted out on the borders around the house by shaping existing mature camellias & azaleas, 'de-clumping' masses of clivias [orange flowers] and agapanthas [white & lilac] and adding small Japanese box hedge and litharope grass to soften the borders.Sandstone flagging in either crazy paving style or cut rectangular blocks [not sure yet - leaning to the rectangular style to imitate the stacked stone look]onto a curvilinear pathway from the front fence gate to the front patio area - caressing around the deciduous flowering magnolia tree - where a small surrounding hedged garden will be positioned and up lights for the magnolia.

2nd Front Terrace - leads to the nature strip/ road side; terrace wall will be in the 1940's style of 'haridan' stacked stone [this where the sandstone is laid in thin length ways on top of each other like a weave] with plans to build a liner picket boundary fence with a flat top [in the same design I did for our [side & driveway gates]. This will be approx. 4- 4 1/2 foot high accompanied by a replicated open swing drive way gate. I love the idea of being able to fully utilise my font yard with pets and children being able to play whilst you're out there - without the dread of someone running to the road that split second you turn away. So this will not only create a beautiful surround for the garden but also another great space that can be utilised! Needless to say the Front yard will be a project that will take another 12 months - whilst we aim to complete the back yard first and find that 'money tree' to grow!

Spring & Loving Colour...

After nearly a month away from Palatial Living it feels like I have been in a daydream away - but no I have been madly decorating & renovating our 'new' old home we bought and moved into in mid July this year! How time flies - whilst paint dries, leaf litter is moved, mulch is laid, curtains hung and furniture moved around! Now I feel like I need at least a few weeks away from the paint brush! But I must say it feels like an addiction - I might have one or two nights off from doing something and then I get restless again and get back into it or much to my supportive loving husband's dread - start another project on the house! Ha ha!

This weekend is my last full weekend home before I jet off again for a week away in Hong Kong & China visiting trad fairs and sourcing new products - but for fashion accessories, jewellery, hats, scarves, bags and footwear for my [day-time gig] as a Group Brand Product Developer/ Designer for a fashion company here in Sydney! So I am planning to get into the garden with my husband who is leading the way - I drew up a garden design & landscaping plan for all the 'room zones' we want to create... very exciting.

So as I get some more time I will post pics of all the different things we have - so far - accomplished at the house, including my bathroom refurbishment - that blew me away!

So for now I will enjoy a little daydream with a coffee and see you soon.

Very pretty plowers for a very pretty & darling little baby girl, Joia Belle,. Who was born last week to my dear friends Nora & her husband Rob, their 3rd child but 1st little girl in the family! I was lucky enough to have a little cuddle when she was just a day old - very lovely & very precious!

Yes this is super tardy for Birthday Wishes to my sweet, smarty darling sister Felic, whose birthday was last week on the 18th August! I have been AWOL from Palatial Living - business development, although she's been cruising the good life at Lake Como Italy with her lovely husband at a friend's home - so I doubt she's had the time to check into Palatial Living - whilst she's been actually living the Palatial Life! All the same for those out there that may think I am a terrible sister I did try calling her numerous time but to no avail with reception. So presents will have to arrive to their London-based pad when they get back home!

So here's a very loving, although belated, Happy Happy Birthday Wish to my 'little' sister Felic - who will have a phenomenal year ahead of her as she embarks on a new fabulous role with a great firm & maybe house hunting in London town with her politically astute & well-versed husband!

Hi There! Yes it me - Sarah from Palatial Living! Some very lovely & kind Palatial Living fans emailed me over the past several weeks to see if I was still alive and keeping Palatial Living going... the answer is YES, and YES!

I have been away for a bit due to a number of what felt like massive life moments going on! Some of you know that my gorgeous, handsome wonderful grandfather 'Pa' passed away towards the end of June, then I set off for a work sourcing & development trip to China & Hong Kong. And of course whilst in the midst of all of this we found and bought new 'lovely older' home! So whilst my grandfather's funeral occurred we were in negotiations for the house, then when I was away for work we were in the settlement process and when I got back we had settled and had to pack up in 2.5weeks and get out previous home tenant ready! Whoa - what a ride the past 4-6weeks have been - hence why I have not been around to be able to give you inspiration, decorating projects and tips n'tricks!

But what is exciting is our lovely new old home located on Sydney's Upper North Shore [one of my all time fave spots you will know form Palatial's Mid Week House Snoops!] - and all the things I am going to get to do to it to rejuvenate it and make it ours.... We have a coveted Northerly Aspect - with Sun from the east over the north to the north-west all day - a perfect aspect for Sydney siders. This also helped inform of the paint colour choices I made. We have already started with painting [in 2 days might I add with a handful of family & family friends along]. We managed to paint 2-3coats on the double brick cement rendered walls - the hall way & entr7y way and also the Dining/ Lounge room in 'Buff It' full tint [Dulux], the Kitchen, Family / Casual Living space in 'Hog Bristle' 1/2 tint [Dulux], our little girl's room in 'Tea Party' 1/4 tint [Dulux] which looks like a gorgeous soft pink marshmallow hue, perfect for a little girl! Then we tackled the master bedroom and it came up beautifully with 'Grand Piano' full tint [Dulux] and in the Office we have a fabulous feature wall with tongue & groove timber panelling that I painted in 'Linseed' 1/2 tint [Dulux] and it all take advantage of the variations of light through the day and compliments our furniture & soft furnishings.

So stay tuned I will be updating you on my home renovation projects as they get done.... but at the moment we're still unpacking a few boxes too!

Our beautiful park like back yard - untouched - full of 40+ year olf camellias,
azaleas, agapanthas, clivias, a few spotted gums, turpentines & Japanese maples.
I have big plans for this gorgeous light filled yard - to
create lots of garden rooms with mass plantings.

Off & Away... for a bit.

Just a quick note to say that yes I am still alive & around! Although you may not know it from my lack thereof of shared inspiration, mid week house snoops, colour design tips & tricks, fab decorating projects - need I go on for what I have been depriving you of!

The saying ' when it rains it pours' that is my life for the past little bit for both family and work life!

So as I write this post - my lovely 1st fur baby Lucy, my Cavalier King Charles, lovingly sits on my lap her head hung over my typing arm... she knows something is going on! And she's right - I am off tomorrow on a plane for a work sourcing & development trip to Hong Kong & many China based cities, with 10 fuelled days of meetings, showroom & factory visits and several flights to throw into the choatic mix... It's a great opportunity & one I have been working towards for a number of years now - so like most things that present themselves to me - I grabbed it with both hands!

So over this time away, I will have limited access to emails let alone ability to post blogs on Palatial Living...

So it is here that I bid you adieu for now til my return when I really really hope that things start to settle down for at least a week or two til my next big project that I am DYING to tell you all about... but stay tuned!

Lost in a Sea...

Please forgive me for my absence from Palatial Living this past week, we received some sad news early Tuesday morning, my grandfather, my 'Pa' - George R Scott [whom I often think of as the original silver fox - a real Cary Grant - suave, charming, handsome and slicked back coiffed silver hair] passed away close to midnight on Monday night. His passing is bittersweet but naturally for the best.

This week my inspiration has been lacking, I'm sure you can appreciate why, and I must say I have felt overwhelmed & almost lost in this sensation of mixed emotions - much like floating in this massive sea, I think that's why this image spoke to me. Peaceful but something else all together.

I was ever to grateful to have been able to spend this past Sunday afternoon with my Pa, holding his hand and taking the opportunity to thank him for being such a wonderful man & grandfather - the best a granddaughter could ever hope for.

I have the chance to honour him tomorrow at his funeral service by reading and speaking part of his eulogy alongside my mum, my aunts, my cousin & my grandmother. .. this time next week I will be in China - timing in our lives is such a bizarre thing. The Ancient Greek philosopher Seneca said [in not so many words] '...expect the unexpected - then we will not be surprised...'

Thank you for your patience - I am sure inspiration will find me again in an unusual way... it just might take a a short while so to share with you again.
So make sure you tell those you hold dearly - that you love them & tell them now - don't let the moment pass. The moment is what we have.

I believe in doing. I believe in doing what you say that you're going to do. I believe that if you put 'it' out there - 'it' will come back to you... both positive & negative.

But sometimes you have to reach out for 'it' too!

This weekend go beyond your comfort zone - try it, go for it, do it!

I think one of the worst things to do is to regret. If you ask the question or give it a go - you may never wonder 'what if'!

Happy Weekend!

Thank you so very much for bearing with me over the past few weeks!

It's been a little bit of a 'flood' of events over the past week or so hence not being able to get onto my love, Palatial Living, so to share all the inspires me - and a few great projects along the way!

A lot has been happening in both work and family life... I am preparing to head off to China week after next for nearly 2 weeks on a sourcing & development trip - which is very exciting but will be a lot of hard work - meeting suppliers and visiting their showrooms, with at least 4 internal flights and an express train trip to boot! All in the name of style & product!

My super - wonderful -lovely students for my Cert IV Design Monday night class at ISCD will have to do without me for 1 week - I will miss them... I love teaching at ISCD, if you're thinking about learning more about colour & design be sure to check out ISCD's website for on campus & distance learning through their iDE [international distance education] program. Which leads me to my fabulous & very resourceful iDE Cert IV Design students - who continue to blow me away over the month of may I had over 8 students submit their work - and you cannot believe the creative pieces they turn out! Am simply continually amazed!

On the home front - we've been cleaning out, throwing out and working out the 'what to do next' phase! Recently our new bed & side tables arrived [thank goodness - the bed was dying!}and our existing tall boy and blanket box no longer matched in colouration to the new pieces... I love the 'old' pieces so was thinking of way to keep them and to not spend more money, & of how I could best re-purpose them...

Solution - I sanded and repainted them - Voila! The last coat of paint on the drawers is drying as we speak! So I plan to post pics of the before and after paint project for you - I am so pleased with the outcome and can't wait to add the crystal drawer knobs, I purchased in my fave home wares store Port Douglas last March whilst on our baby moon, onto the drawers! Stay tuned...

So a little more garage cleaning tomorrow and a trip to the local tip... and definitely a glass of wine!

Someone asked me how I was going the other week...

I replied 'swimmingly - thank you'; even though I had a tonne of things to do and felt pushed to the endth - seems like a wave of things have happened at once for me [all positive but not enough time in the day - hence my MIA Palatial Living posts - more on that later]! My grandmother always told me that there is nothing more boring that someone hearing about how you 'really are'... and nothing says it better than than this lovely image of a red pink fantail gold fish! Just swimming on by trying to look like it's ever so effortless floating away.... And I also love gold fish too!

Perfect Palatial Paper Pieces...

Lately I've noticed a trend of paper 'crafts' art becoming more visible and more commercial through the likes of 'Hard to Find', 'Hand Made' and 'Etsy'. Back at Christmas time on Palatial Living I looked at a Brisbane based paper artist with her stunning decorations simply made from paper - but achieving such a delicate, modern & intricate look. I also love the works of UK Surface Designer [Paper] Artist - Rob Ryan, and could do a bit of damage in his online store aptly name 'Ryantown' via etsy.

Paper art is something that shouldn't be overlooked - beautiful, clean, fresh, and sometime fragile delicate also vintage looks that can be achieved using paper [pieces] is surprising. By thinking about using paper you don't always need to think about using 'new' fresh paper - think about repurposing an old book, left over paper from your computer printer, newspaper etc... this is also a way to think 'green'!

Creative Curtains

Create confetti curtains for your windows from cut paper. Cut out squares from different weights of paper with a die-cut punch (available at scrapbooking stores) or scissors. Sew the squares together, spacing regularly, to make a string as long as your window frame; tie knots at the top of each square and at the bottom of each string to secure. Hang each on a tension rod from curtain clips. These curtains are a great way to decorate a boring window without blocking out natural light. Get creative and use different colors for your garland depending on your room's color scheme or the season

Pretty Tissue Flowers

These delicate petals create an elegant centerpiece whether scattered down the center of a table or piled on a platter. To create, cut a flower shape or 3-inch circles from eight layers of tissue paper. Place in a stack. Next, poke a hole through the stack with a pin. Pull the paper off the tip of a twist tie and insert the exposed wire through the paper layers. Twist the wire to create the flower center. Make the flower bloom by gently pulling up one layer at a time.

Get Rolling

Quilling is a simple yet elegant way to embellish home accessories, such as a white picture frame. To create, cut paper into 1/8-inch-wide strips with a ruler and crafts knife; vary the lengths of the strips. Load a strip onto a slotted quilling tool (find tools and kits at quilledcreations.com). Twist the tool to coil the paper tightly. Once coiled, pull the paper off the tool and release slowly to uncoil slightly to your desired size. When finished, the quills can be glued to objects, such as a picture frame, to add a beautiful decoration to an otherwise plain frame.

A Manly House Snoop...with a Sublime Palatial Touch.

Now I'm not really that interested in cooking, so if it takes more than 20mins prep-time I'm out of there so sometime that rules out a lot. So it's a good thing that my husband prefers to cook in our household - his way of relaxing! I recently found a great article in American interiors mag House Beautiful that I wanted to share with you... I thought it had some great tips & tricks for making the most of small or smaller spaces that often perplex us with 'what to do?' . These are probably the most asked questions & dilemmas that my clients come across in styling their homes & office spaces - that's where I come in to help them!

Organize Furniture into Mini-Rooms > In this New York City studio apartment — just under 400 square feet furniture is arranged by function. The distinct zones help make the space feel much larger.

Choose Furniture that Does Double Duty > To maximize space in the studio, a large farm table is used as a desk, and transforms it into a dining table when entertaining. Large black wire bins stylishly store files — and make it easy to move them elsewhere.

Float Furniture in the Center of the Room > In this small guesthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, designers Marshall Watson and Jeffrey Kilmer arranged the furniture in the small living room away from the walls. "If you create space beyond the furniture, it adds volume to a room," says Kilmer

Create Hidden Storage > Interior designer David Kaihoi lives large in his small New York City one-bedroom apartment with multi-functional furniture. The elegant banquette serves as seating for both the dining table and the living room, plus it stores linens and towels underneath.

Add Closet Space with an Armoire> In a 1,400 square-foot Alabama cottage, designer Melanie Pounds designed an Ultrasuede armoire to compensate for small closets in the master bedroom.

Create an Additional Entertaining Area> If you have a small kitchen and entertain frequently, set up a small table away from the kitchen. In her home's entryway, Pounds chose a skirted console table to display books and flowers for everyday use. When she entertains, she uses it as a bar or serving table. "There's less congestion in the galley kitchen and dining room. It saved us!"

Choose an Open Console> Pounds designed a leggy console to hold her bathroom sink instead of a traditional closed cabinet. The open space helps to make the bathroom feel larger.
